I love watching those home building shows where they show you the ultimate walk in closets. Everything is so perfecting folded and placed on beautiful shelving or laying in matching baskets. These closets usually have specific places for shoes, hats, belts, bags, etc… And the ultimate closets have pull out drawers for your sunglasses, ties, socks, and personal items. Imagine sitting on an ottoman in the middle of your closet as you are are deciding what to wear for the day. Have you ever dreamed about having this kind of closet?
Now back to reality. Most of us live with closets that don’t have enough shelving and the clothes are crammed in, ready to topple over. The hanging space is usually packed so tight, that items disappear to the back, never to be seen again. And how often do you pick things off the floor because they slid off the hangers?
At least once a year, I do a 'spring' cleaning in my home. It never fails that I will go through my closet and find things at the bottom of piles with the price tag still on it. What??? How did I forget about that shirt? Did I really buy that? When?
Well, guess what! We don’t have to live with substandard closets anymore. We can have that beautiful space of our dreams with just a little time and elbow grease. There are so many internet sites with gorgeous closet organization ideas that are very achievable for the average person. And I have a few suggestions below:
First, decide what colors you love and will make your closet feel beautiful and relaxed. I would suggest keeping the shelving and racks a neutral color and then use pops of color with the hangers and baskets.
Next, look at how much hanging space there is compared to shelving. If your closet is lacking shelf space, either have a closet system installed or you can buy cubical storage units from several different retailers.
Once your space is ready, pick 1 or 2 styles of storage containers. This is where I would splurge a little. Find a wicker basket that you love or a modern fabric box that just calls your name. Buy several of these so that you can fill the shelves with them. Then find hanging tags that match the style chosen and label them with what will be in each basket… ex. t-shirts, socks, scarves, etc…
Lastly, consider buying all new non-slip hangers. These hangers come in many colors and are lined with velvet. Even the most slippery top will stay on these hangers. And stick with one color.
