It seems strange to say that you need to open your home up “for the winter”. But here in Florida, seasonal residents do just that. Many spend the summers traveling the world or just heading north to a second home.
Having a home that has been unoccupied for several months, presents several challenges. Just making all things useable can be a daunting task. First, does your home have power? Strange things can happen during a stormy Florida summer. Summer storms often times have lightning and thunder which may cause power outages. Also, electronic equipment may be damaged, if it was left plugged in.
Next, you may be wondering if you have water. Sometimes, people choose to turn their water off so that there aren’t any leaks while you are gone. Those leaks can cause significant damage to almost anything in you home. Do you know how to turn the water on?
Then, you must think about the living quality inside your home. Was the furniture covered with sheets? Has dust collected on them? How dirty/dusty are the floors, lights, ceiling fans, cupboards, dishes, etc… Are you able to take care of all these things?
Florida homes most often have a patio or lanai. And if you leave during the summer, I am willing to bet that the furniture, plant stands, grill, and other items have been moved or put in the garage for storage. Just replacing those items can be a lot of work. Also, does the floor or screen enclosure need to be pressure washed?
These are just a few areas that require attention when returning to your home. Have you tried to always handle this on your own? How much is your time worth to you? Is it worth investing all your time in preparing your home and dealing with any issues that have come up? Or is it more valuable to you to arrange for someone to oversee all of this so you can enjoy being in Florida.
